My first TED Talk was 5 Ways to Kill Your Dreams. Bel Pesce made this talk to show you what to believe in order not to achieve your goals.
She starts off by saying you should believe in over night success. When she talks about overnight success, she is telling you what to do to kill your dreams, but at the same time, she is trying to tell you what to really do to achieve your goals. I was quite confused by this, I mean, shes telling me to kill my dreams, but also wants me to do the right thing. It all unfolds in a way that shows you, you don't really want to kill your dreams, you want to avoid it. I was also confused by why overnight success doesn't really happen, I mean you hear stories about it all the time, so why shouldn't we believe in it? She goes on to say that, yes, things do happen over night, but there is always preparation for it. Bel adds in her own story about coming from Brazil, and how she stated her college application process 2 weeks before it was due. She mentions that many think this was an overnight success, but indeed it was not. She says she cared about her life and education before the application process, which was her preparation for the success.
She also talks about making your own decisions, and not taking answers from others. I believe you needed guidance to get where you wanted, which she proves true, but she also says you cannot rely on others to make the decision for you. She compares your decisions to pipes, saying there are infinitely many possibilities and paths you can take to success. She said something that really stuck with me through the segment and that was "no one else can make the decisions for your life, the pipes are infinite, and your going to bump your heads as part of the process."
Deciding to settle was what she talked about next. She says never settle for what you already have. There are so many growth opportunities for you, and you should never settle for less than you can achieve, otherwise you'll never get anywhere, but rather stick in the same place.
Not taking responsibility for your actions is next. She states that if you always blame someone ( or something) else that you will never improve. That is a sure way to never take another step in life. You can't achieve your goal if you can't fix the mistakes.
Lastly, she talks about the only things that matter, are the dreams themselves. She goes on to say that, yes the goal is the goal, and that is what you want to reach, but the journey to your goal is the most important. You may find other things you love on the way to your dream, meet new people, and try new things. This all adds up to the importance of your goal. It helps you discover what you really want to do with that dream.
What I really liked about this was that she told you what you can do versus what you should do in order to achieve your dreams. I didn't think this was what the TED Talk was about when I read the title, but it surprised me, and showed me what is really important in the journey of reaching your goals.
